on the way, ross-on-wye

So we've gone on a drive this week, 'round the bends and through the valleys.
On the way, we found Baileys, thanks to our lovely friend Emily and her recomendation. Photos not usually allowed here, but I managed to get a smile, and I'm in.
Vintage meets re-made, meets France meets countryside, and the swirliest writing on tiny brown labels. Shelves of reclaimed glass, bins of pegs and brushes, enamel cookware, and classic linen towels in crisp red and white, and soft blue and grey.
But most importantly I want the industrial wire pigeonholes. And those bare filament bulbs, to fill a barn with my treasures, ladders all the way to the rafters, softened floorboards under foot.

wire and wood and rough wool, grey light no sun in sight

January days and the sun is so low, barely there. The building large, but inside, each corner and room give light to every object, collected and categorized.
It's the small things I save in jars, bits of string and a stone from that one day, holding onto our days however we can.

french canadian

My first full winter in England, and I have succumbed to the ritual of the Sunday roast. Carbs and gravy, you can't really go wrong when the sky is grey and the cider is sparkling. British Sundays are good days.
But I have missed one Canadian treat, Tourtière. My mother would bake, making two or three at a time, and they would appear on Christmas Eve, a Réveillon tradition.
Bringing back the Quebecois, so follows my vegetarian version, perfect for winter days.

Puy Lentil Tourtière
adapted from my Mother's recipe
one cup puy lentils
vegetable stock cube
one cup TVP (texturized vegetable protein)
olive oil
four garlic cloves, finely chopped
half white onion, finely chopped
two tomatoes, roughly chopped
three tablespoons tomato paste
salt + pepper
one teaspoon savory
one teaspoon brown sugar
two shortcrust rolls
soy milk for brushing

In large pot bring one cup of water and lentils to the boil, add stock cube then simmer gently for twenty minutes. In a small bowl add one cup of boiling water to the TVP to reconstitute, let sit for ten minutes. Pan fry the garlic and onion in olive oil, then add tomatoes and paste. Cook slowly to soften.
Once lentils have cooked and absorbed most of the water add in moist TVP and onion garlic mixture. Mix in spices and sugar, salt and pepper to taste. reduce heat and simmer for thirty minutes. Remove from heat and let sit.

Preheat oven to 230 C.
Roll out base crust and line pie tin. Pour in filling, levelling out, and roll out second crust to create lid. Slash the center to allow for steam, and brush the lid with soy milk for golden brown crust. Bake pie for ten minutes, then reduce heat to 180C and continue baking for forty minutes.
Serve with pan fried winter greens, and red wine aplenty.

one hundred pages

My old stomping grounds, Queen Street West, and that summer I worked at Preloved, I used to pop into Type every other day. I would stare out at Trinity Bellwoods, sun and rain and everyone in the city would wander by. Clafouti for a bagel, Nadege for coffee and macarons on Sundays.

I miss my books, I had to leave all mine at my parents house, boxed in the cold.
I took a few last time I was home, hid deep in my bag, but it's so hard to choose.
I'm finding more, slowly.

three days spent on the couch

i have called in sick for work. i lay facing the window, with the road just below. but i only see sky and trees and a glimpse of the rising and draining river. at any given moment, up or down today? i like living next to this river.
our flat is silent, mostly, save for the ever playing television i seek out online.  from morning until night i watch television. i need the voice, i can both feel and not feel at once. i watch programs and films, crack house and bake a cake, a sad teacher, polar bears and rich people, and love and death.

wednesday was blue light, the winter sun never quite reaching, but warming nonetheless. yesterday was grey, the fat rain falling, i stay here glued to the brown leather.  this morning is filled with white fog, i can't see the river. i can't see anything for a while. i'm in a white room, in a white city. i imagine everyone is still.
it's lifting now though, where does the fog go. i have drank all the orange juice, and i think i will take a shower now.

mostly i like his photo titles, or maybe these just remind me of summer in ontario. slight differences, provincial park and coco-cola signs on the drive, dewy mornings at camp and warm evenings with corn and a beer. maybe next summer, lake dives and mosquito bites aplenty.

the rest of our herbs are looking a bit sad, i need to get creative/more sunshine please England.
